Hello...

Within the Lotus it all comes in focus...
It was an adventure unlike any other. Now, the images rush my mind. It's been a melange of thoughts, experiences, ideas, understanding, and emotions. I think I've witnessed every aspect of humanity...from the extreme worst and bottom (things I hope someone never has to see) to the very top (and that can be read literally...because I've seen a one billion dollar house)...plus every part of society that fills the void between the two. I saw things that will immediately bring most people to tears, actions that will provide years of joy, and felt the need to reevaluate many of my own (and society/Earth's) notions.

I'm now sitting here, in Delhi, thinking about all I've been through. I could maybe say that "I've seen it all"...but that would probably not work since life will continue to carry on (and hopefully progress). I could say, "you don't know how good you have it", but that is a pretty relative statement. I could get philosophical and mention that you, me, I, him, her, they, us, them, she, he, them, our, yours, or who are all we...merely people...a family, on this path called life, together...chasing the same dreams, breathing the same air, sharing the same blood, living for today, and thinking about tomorrow...but how would that change the paradigm's of the masses. What if we all make a conscious effort to share, give, be more respectful and compassionate, and smile...we could make the world a better place (remember, 99 is not 100).

At this point, there are really no words that can describe or provide a solid summation of all that I've been through, a part of, seen, and lived. You'll have to talk with me to get the real story :)

This journey began in Mumbai where it's very dense and there is a constant assault on your senses (and mind). After that stent, there were 12 more cities (13 ish total on this escapade) that provided 12 separate and unique adventures (read this blog ;). Everything outside of Mumbai seemed (relatively) small. Now, after living the Delhi-life, those other 11 places seem even smaller. Delhi is huge...I think it's more spread-out/less vertical than Mumbai (and maybe a few million or so people less...and we're talking millions here)...but still, it's massive.

Delhi is amazing and I wish I had more time to stay here. Like anywhere else in the world, there is too much "stuff" (think of anything [minus food/water], there's too much...here, there, everywhere). I've really thought about this "stuff" for the last couple of days as I've been walking around. Why is there so much "stuff" and yet, people are starving? Such a complex issue without any obvious tangible solution other than don't have/buy so much "stuff", but how to get that idea to transcend across cultures et cetera beats me. But after spending so much time in India, Delhi feels like everywhere else in India. I still pay 15 rupees for 1 liter of pani...but will pay 2-ish dollars for a liter of water in the U.S...Figure that one out. Becoming roadkill is no longer my biggest concern on the roads...it's making sure I pay no more than 10 INR for an orange. I've become the map...I've walked for miles (tried to count...too many miles to form an estimate).

I recommend that you don't ride the Metro Rails during rush-hour (I think it always might be rush hour)...but that's just a recommendation...so do it ;) Just make sure you're prepared...Delhi Metro is where you truly practice your survival skills (I'm not kidding). There is no personal-space or space (I think I've perfected the art of "getting skinny"). There is no line (there's a queue...but that concept quickly falls apart). If you've ever suffered from claustrophobia, I may have found the cure. I don't have any pictures (mostly because it is difficult to reach into your pocket) so I encourage you to do an image search. Another "ride of a lifetime"...I just keep on having them.

 Love Delhi.

As the sun sets on this escapade...I have so much to think back on and so much to remember. Sadly, I will be leaving soon, but I am so happy that I jumped on this opportunity.

The sun will rise tomorrow. The day is what you make of it.
Be the author. Write your story.

"India is friend"...I grew a beard and became addicted to masala chai. India will always hold a special place in my heart...and I'm forever thankful.

Thank you Summer and Adina, Sunil and SamvitAbbas, and all of the other awesome people...yes you too Cooley... for helping make this escapade so memorable and exciting.

    धन्यवाद भारत
आप अगली बार देखना

Never say goodbye...we always say hello as we continue to write this life story.

Rivers Meet

As previously mentioned, today there was a slight tangent in this escapade's itinerary. I'm a firm believer in pursuing an opportunity...especially when the opportunity is potentially a once in a lifetime experience. Why pass on a/any chance? Life...it's all about the story and you are the author...experience as much as possible, take risks, live without regrets because there are no regrets - only lessons and rewards, free spirits soar...et cetera, et cetera. Maybe that's all a little dramatic, but I'm sure you get the point.

This entire escapade has been so busy...there was indeed "free time" for an additional city...but why? Something happens in this city every 12 years...

2013 happens to be one...

 कुम्भ मेला
Kumbh Mela

The best way for me to explain this is...think of the last (or your favorite) fair or festival you attended and multiply it by 100 million. Kumbh Mela is amazing (and huge). I challenge you to look it up. It will be one of the big highlights of this trip and a memory that will last a lifetime. I highly doubt that I will have the feeling that a crowd is "too big" ever agin. Please, at least do an image search because these pictures are not the greatest.

Two days, two cities that have been holy for time immemorial. I apologize for not being able to thoroughly explain them...one must experience them and draw their own conclusion. My conclusion...just a more solid and deeper perspective about this life.

Flying to Delhi in the morning...and if someone needs a ride, why not give it to them?

24 February, 2013

Had my last jaunt on a train for this escapade last night...

After so many hours on the trains, I think I'm truly going to miss riding the rails in India. It is one of the most unique traits of this land and like the roads (remember iLife), it is easy to become addicted to the rails and all of the joys and frustrations they offer.

Spent the morning discussing life, India and American politics, religions, our cultural similarities and differences, marriage, economies and money, family, language, building construction, climate change, cricket, and pretty much anything with a very nice young man at the train car's door...also known as the water cooler in Sleeper Class.

Should have maybe not been so close to the edge...
But since it wasn't my first rodeo...
It's not a big deal.
Now I'm here...

माँ गंगा
The Ganges

मांगलिक
It's a mystical place that can only be experienced. Maybe everything you've heard or read about her is true...but regardless of whatever that could be...there is definitely a unique vibe on an auspicious level.

A sacred and special place for many people. Maybe we all need a sacred or special...some say happy...place that we can escape to or take a break at. Maybe having this type of place is another piece of maintaining a balanced life's puzzle. Find a place.

Tomorrow's a secret...and it wasn't on the original itinerary. In my truest fashion of traveling where there's usually a twist, I'll be gone early in the morning.

Check back later to see what all the hype is about ;)

23 February, 2013

There was no holding back today...A-Game was brought.

Flat Stanley was able to see and experience in one day what can typically take people two or three days...

Mostly because bringing the A-Game includes knowing how to negotiate tuk-tuk rides down from 1300 to 500 and 120 to 40, so on and so forth...but more importantly because the A-Game means remaining dedicated and diligent to the cause (definitely try to apply that logic to anything in life ;)...

I can't say it enough...

Wandering without a tour book/guide will provide the greatest results.

Best naan to date.
Cross another city off the list. By the way, I've left Rajasthan and entered Uttar Pradesh. I'm about to board a train for the night where I hope to end up like this dude I saw today...

While I'm away...I'll offer you the chance to experience one minute in a tuk-tuk...

Ending this escapade in the fast lane...

A Flat Stanley Adventure

Almost seems crazy that in the past, society would give nearly everything to a small group of people who would then live such an extravagant life...

Good thing we don't do that anymore...

Or do we?

It's all relative...just an intriguing topic (there's some idle time while riding trains...so one must come up with something to do and stuff to consider).

To end this post on a high note with something that is universal and acceptable:

Dogs are probably the best at sleeping. Any place...this is on an elephant path...any time. Not a care in the world, just time for a nap. Snoozin and treats...mostly snoozin.

Another day, another challenge...

This evening I am able to report that Operation Cobra, which was requested by a friend, was successfully completed this afternoon.

Here are some pictures. Enjoy!

(Music playing in the background by the gentleman in the orange shirt...cobra appears)
"Cobra" -White Shirt
"I see that" -Me
Whispers:
(Places turban on me) "You are now Maharaja...look, no poison" -White Shirt
"You sure?" -Me
"No problem...have picture" -White Shirt
"Was that a snicker?" -Me
(Crowd starts to gather)
Mumbles:
"Wait...nahi (no)!, nahi (no)!...son of a..." -Me
"Looks good!" -White shirt
(Crowd has now grown and is showing enthusiasm for cobra vs foreigner)
After these pictures and I assume many more by the crowd...cobra is put back in basket, music stops, and turban is returned...adrenaline begins to go down.

No injuries, everyone is happy.

Challenge complete. √

Another day, another monkey(s)...

Had the opportunity to visit and experience another monkey "area" today (locally referred to as Monkey Temple). More walking/hiking up/down hills et cetera...more space this time than the last adventure...however, no "good" escape plan with the elevation and rocks...plus I'm feeling relatively "comfortable" in these situations now (also known as: decline the offer from the boy who is the self-proclaimed "protector" who is charging 100 INR)...but still...monkeys. :)

A little secret...

This time I've brought ammo (peanuts)...

So in order to enjoy an extraordinary view like this...

You've got to be ready to deal with this...

They're everywhere...think X, Y, and Z axis.
By doing something like this (plus - just a little bit of - keen situational awareness)...

Thanks for the assist Flat Stanley
What about the extra ammunition you ask?

Harmony.
Share it with the others...sharing is caring.

Overall...there were no "big" problems during the trek. A few minor incidents that required a rapid change of plan and/or action. For the most part, the incidents were occurring among the monkeys. I almost lost my water bottle, but have seen the typical monkey steals water bottle event before...so I was ready.

Another awesome example of pushing the limits of travel and how amazing it can be.

Life...always keeps you guessing...and wanting more :)

Train-Life (with Flat Stanley)

Out of the desert, but still in Rajasthan.
I saw a parrot this morning...must not be as dry in this city.
Stay warm rascals...I am ;)

19 February, 2013

That's Raju and me watching the sunset on top of a sand dune out in the Thar.

Flat Stanley was there too...but didn't do much.

Desert: a place filled with peace and quiet.

Overall, a nice break from all the sights and sounds of India city-life.

Boarding a train soon to another new city.

Things to think about while I'm away:
Always be an advocate for a Free Tibet.
Note: there is no lake at this time.
Still on the fence about climate change?
Consider rain...in the Thar...in February.

Rooftop-life in the desert with Flat Stanley...

There should be more (hashtag) rooftop-life in the U.S.

I venture into the desert tonight on the back of a camel and then sleep in a tent under a blanket of stars. Wish me luck.

Tomorrow night...more train-life as we overnight it to a new city/adventure.

Ever get curious? Consider and/or learn about wind power/wind farms...I've seen some in my current location and they are pretty neat.

Respect the Earth.

Off to feed a lonely puppy I've met.

16 February, 2013

Enjoy storms? Sometimes I do...did last night. Ever make it an adventure and find a good spot to ride out the inclement weather? Sometimes I do...did last night.

With a little patience, you can find peace within a storm.
Flat Stanley missed out on this morning's adventure(s) where there were views like this:

But he was able to attend this afternoon's adventure...just another gauntlet- India-Style:

Yes, they will confront you...
Wait, they're more afraid of me than I am of them...right?
Sure (snicker).
Enter if you dare.
Rockstar.
Jai Hanuman.

After such a big adventure, Flat Stanley was in need of a refreshment:

Nothing beats a Makhaniya Lassi...except maybe one that is mango or banana.

Leaving for the next city in the morning ... More adventures on this escapade.

I've read something about a camel plus a tent in my travel notes     : /  and/or   :)
